doctor instructions for pet revaccination

Electronic medical records (EMRs) hold great promise for improving the practice of evidence based medicine by facilitating communication between members of the health care team. The most profound influence of EMRs may lie in their ability to encourage clients' involvement in their own pets care.

doctor instructions for pet revaccination

You do not get vaccinated for three to seven different diseases every year and neither should your dog or cat. Veterinary immunologists have advised that the previous customary practice of annual pet revaccination is NOT based on science or sound medical reasoning. There presently exists a lot of confusion about this issue. Human flu vaccinations are sometimes given to humans every year. A new flu vaccine must be developed and given because new types of flu virus keep emerging through out the world. Vaccinations given to adult dogs and cats are the same vaccinations given to puppies and kittens. Immunologist are alarmed by the harm from unnecessary revaccination of adult dogs and cats. Studies of pet vaccinations given yearly over and over again through out the life time of pets have provided veterinarians and the general public a lot more information about the risk involved associated with annual revaccination. There exists a lot of controversy about the accuracy of these vaccine caused deaths. Vaccine mortality and morbidity death rates in studies funded by pet vaccine companies often tend to be lower than studies funded by independent researchers. Vaccine- caused deaths even in vaccine company funded studies estimate death rates in the thousands annually and cost to pet owners to care for vaccine caused disease is estimated in the millions of dollars. If published studies from independent researchers not funded by vaccine manufactures are used to estimate the amount of vaccination caused disease together with estimated associated mortality most veterinarians who vaccinate or have vaccinated annually with some types of commonly used rabies and feline leukemia vaccinations should have seen patients die due to vaccination. What would happen in human medicine if most physicians had seen patients die from vaccinations given to us every year? Specialist in the immunology field do agree that ANNUAL RE VACCINATION IS NOT BASED ON SCIENCE OR SOUND MEDICAL REASONING. Vaccination series beyond the puppy or kitten age are ill-conceived when done only to collect license tax or force owners to bring pets into the office for wellness care. There are situations where adult booster vaccinations are occasionally needed, for example, when pets have not been properly vaccinated as pups or kittens. Adult pets going into special environments may need vaccinations similar to when humans need extra vaccinations when they travel out of the country. For example, humans may occasionally need a tetanus booster as an adult. An important question to ask yourself is: "What do human doctors do to ensure that children who are vaccinated at an early age, usually less than 6 years of age, still have immunity at 20, 40, 60, or 90 years of age?" Nothing! We don't measure titers in people, and we don't routinely revaccinate adults. We rely on the memory cells of the immune system. Since vaccines for people are similar in many ways to canine or feline vaccines, since the immune system of a person is similar to that of an animal, and since immunity persists for the life of a person (average 70+/- years), then why wouldn't immunity from canine or feline vaccines persist for 10 to 15 years?
We welcome the opportunity to discuss with you the risk/benefit and cost of vaccinations well as any other procedures we do to. Vaccinations if given properly save lives but excessive vaccination are costly and can result in harm including death. Fortunately we are NOT required in our county to revaccinate for rabies every year. Most local veterinary practices still revaccinate yearly. Veterinary schools through out the country have taken the lead to encourage stopping this practice. There are some people that are confused or will confuse the issue by telling you the experts disagree on the need to revaccinate pets annually. We challenge them to produce any peer-reviewed publication written by any veterinary immunologist supporting annual revaccination for medical reasons. We can provide you with numerous peer-reviewed publications written by veterinary immunologists advising AGAINST the current local customary practice of annual re vaccination.
The largest pet vaccine manufacture has advertised to veterinarians that if pets are not vaccinated annually 60 to 70% of pet owners will not return for needed wellness care .The second largest pet vaccine manufacturer advertizes its rabies vaccine saying in the add ( quote) " Its not how often you vaccinate its what you vaccinate with". Vaccine companies selling human vaccines are not allowed to market their vaccinations to human doctors with such statements in their ads. Can you picture Ralph Nader in front of congress asking the large corporate human vaccine companies about similar human vaccine ads?
Our practice philosophy is that we will try very hard to convince you that preventive heath care is good for your pet but we will not sell vaccinations as a carrot or stick to get you to bring pets in to our hospital for wellness care. Current law now allows pet vaccine makers to produce a rabies vaccine whose bottle label says to revaccinate every three years requiring you to vaccinate *animal* every three years. The manufacturer can take the same vaccine and put a one year re- vaccination label on it

so that *animal* would need vaccinated every year by law

or you may be fined up to five hundred dollars.

NO difference in the vaccination or bottle just different labels. This practice results in unnecessary vaccination when the identical vaccine with the one year label not the three year usage label can be purchased. Your own medical doctor is not allowed to purchase human vaccinations with the option of different re- vaccination schedule label instructions. Human vaccine labeling is under FDA control, animal vaccination labeling is not. The FDA regulates human vaccines and does not invoke federal privilege to indemnify human vaccine manufacturers from liability in state courts. Interestingly, the government agency which oversees veterinary vaccines DOES invoke federal privilege to limit vaccine manufacture from liability in state courts. Therefore there is no "deep pocket" to tap for liability when adverse reactions occur with veterinary vaccines.

Rabies vaccination failures still do occur in very young animals only vaccinated one time but before a second vaccine has been given. This is why two vaccines are sometimes needed. There will always be a few animals that don't achieve good immunity no matter how many times and when they are vaccinated.
A medical benefit to justify the medical risk and cost of adult serial revaccination for rabies once the second vaccination has been given is lacking. The traditional historical medical practice of serial yearly rabies revaccination of adult cat and dogs is economically not medically conceived.
